Interns will support our regional Farm to Early Care and Education (ECE) program, which collaborates with 15 early care sites across Broome, Chenango, and Delaware counties. Farm to Early Care and Education interns will work as part of a team with the Farm to ECE Coordinator to develop, implement, grow, and evaluate programs that bring nutritious, locally grown food to children and their families. Interns will work with staff, children, parents, farms, and community partners to increase capacity for hands-on learning, local procurement, and creating a community culture of wellness.
Internship schedule is flexible and can be tailored to the student’s availability. Preference will be given to candidates available throughout the academic year and during the hours of 9 AM–2 PM on Tuesdays through Thursdays to support taste test programming.
Program goals:
- Increase access to nutritious, locally grown food in early care site meals
- Engage children in hands-on growing, cooking, and tasting activities to build food literacy
- Foster farm to ECE leadership among educators through training and professional development opportunities
Support families’ nutrition security through access to local food, outreach, and education
Strengthen program sustainability through collaboration, outreach, and family engagement
Responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1) Work independently while staying engaged with the broader Farm to ECE team
2) Attend regular team and partner meetings
3) Create and distribute outreach materials such as social media posts, blog entries, newsletters, and videos
4) Record and organize program data for evaluation and reporting
5) Plan and deliver educational activities such as taste tests and gardening, in collaboration with the Farm to ECE Coordinator
6) Maintain a regular presence at early care sites to support food- and garden-based learning
7) Assist with hands-on learning experiences, including cooking, gardening, and taste testing
8) Contribute to resource development efforts that support program activities
Qualifications:
- Interest in early childhood education, public health, nutrition, gardening, or food systems
- Experience working with young children in formal or informal settings
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Familiarity with social media content creation preferred
- Comfort in kitchen or gardening settings is helpful but not required
- A valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle
